Located just south of the main tourist area, Tanji Bird Reserve is one of The Gambia’s premier coastal birdwatching destinations. The reserve protects an exceptional variety of habitats, including mudflats, mangrove swamps, coastal scrub, Guinea savanna, lagoons, sandy beaches and offshore reef, supporting an outstanding diversity of resident and migratory birds throughout the year.

Bird Highlights

Tanji is particularly renowned for its abundance of coastal and wetland birds, especially during the northern winter migration.

Large numbers of herons, egrets, cormorants, gulls, terns, waders and migratory shorebirds gather around the lagoon and mudflats, while the surrounding woodland supports kingfishers, bee-eaters and numerous passerines.

Habitat

The reserve combines mangrove channels, tidal mudflats, freshwater lagoons, coastal scrub, Guinea savanna, sandy shoreline and offshore reef. This diversity of habitats attracts an impressive range of waterbirds, raptors and woodland species within a relatively compact area.

Tanji is widely regarded as one of the finest locations in The Gambia for observing Osprey, with sightings possible throughout much of the year.

Best Time to Visit

Birdwatching is rewarding year-round, but the dry season (November to April) brings the greatest numbers of migratory shorebirds and seabirds. Low tide is often the best time to observe feeding waders and waterbirds along the mudflats, while early mornings provide excellent activity throughout the reserve.
