Kingfishers in The Gambia
The Gambia is home to several spectacular kingfisher species, from the tiny Malachite and Pygmy Kingfishers to the impressive Giant Kingfisher. These colourful birds are commonly found around rivers, creeks, wetlands, mangroves and coastal lagoons, particularly along Kotu Creek, the River Gambia and Tanji Bird Reserve.
Bee-eaters & Rollers
Among The Gambia’s most colourful birds, bee-eaters and rollers are often seen perched on branches or overhead wires before making graceful flights to catch insects. They are frequently found in open woodland, savannah, farmland and riverbanks, with species such as the Little Bee-eater, Northern Carmine Bee-eater and Abyssinian Roller delighting visitors throughout the country.
Raptors & Owls
The Gambia supports an impressive variety of birds of prey, including eagles, vultures, hawks and several owl species. These magnificent hunters can be found soaring above forests, wetlands and open countryside or resting in woodland during the day. Early morning and evening excursions often provide excellent opportunities to observe these powerful birds in their natural habitats.

Wetlands are among The Gambia’s richest bird habitats, supporting herons, egrets, finfoots, plovers and many migratory waterbirds throughout the year. From the mangroves of Tanji Bird Reserve to the quiet channels of Kotu Creek and the River Gambia, these habitats offer exceptional birdwatching for visitors interested in waterbirds and wetland ecosystems.
Forest Birds
The forests and woodlands of The Gambia are home to some of the country’s most striking species, including colourful turacos, sunbirds, helmetshrikes and starlings. Protected areas such as Bijilo Forest Park, Abuko Nature Reserve and community forests provide excellent opportunities to observe these birds among dense vegetation and flowering trees.
