Located approximately 8 kilometres south of Brikama, Marakissa Woods is one of western Gambia’s most rewarding birdwatching destinations. The site combines mature woodland, freshwater wetlands, riverine habitat and open clearings, creating excellent conditions for an impressive diversity of birds within a relatively compact area.

The peaceful setting, comfortable riverside accommodation and easy access from the coast make Marakissa an excellent choice for both day trips and overnight birdwatching excursions.

Habitat

Marakissa combines woodland, freshwater pools, riverbank vegetation, open grassland and cultivated areas along the Marakissa River. This habitat diversity attracts both resident birds and seasonal migrants while supporting an excellent range of mammals, reptiles and butterflies.

A canoe trip along the river provides additional opportunities to observe kingfishers, herons and other wetland species from the water.

Best Time to Visit

Birdwatching is productive throughout the year, with the dry season (November to April) offering the easiest viewing conditions. Early mornings are especially rewarding as woodland birds become active, while late afternoons often provide excellent opportunities for photographing raptors and river birds.
