Located in the heart of The Gambia’s main tourist area, Kotu Creek is one of the country’s most accessible and rewarding birdwatching sites. A network of freshwater pools, reedbeds, woodland and tidal creek habitats supports an exceptional variety of species, making it an ideal introduction to Gambian birding.
The Bird Watchers’ Association headquarters is based at Kotu Creek, where visitors can easily arrange guided excursions with licensed local bird guides.

Kotu Creek is famous for its remarkable diversity, with excellent opportunities to observe kingfishers, rollers, bee-eaters, raptors and wetland birds throughout the year.

Habitat
Kotu Creek combines freshwater pools, reedbeds, tidal channels, woodland and open grassland within a compact area. This variety of habitats makes it one of the richest birding locations on the Gambian coast and an excellent destination for photography.
Best Time to Visit
Birdwatching is productive throughout the year. Early mornings provide the greatest activity, while late afternoons often produce excellent views of kingfishers, raptors and waterbirds around the creek and photographic hide.
