Located just a short drive from the main tourist hotels, Brufut Woods Community Nature Reserve is one of The Gambia’s finest forest birding sites. This protected woodland is especially renowned for its excellent opportunities to observe nocturnal species during daylight, while its mature trees and dense undergrowth support an impressive variety of forest birds throughout the year.

Its accessibility and diversity make it a rewarding destination for both casual birdwatchers and dedicated photographers.

Bird Highlights

Brufut Woods is best known as one of the country’s most reliable locations for seeing the Long-tailed Nightjar at its daytime roosts.

Other regularly recorded species include:

  • Verreaux’s Eagle-Owl
  • White-faced Scops Owl
  • Pearl-spotted Owlet
  • Green Turaco
  • Cardinal Woodpecker

The reserve also supports Klaas’s Cuckoo, Orange-cheeked Waxbill, Greater Honeyguide, Yellow White-eye and many other woodland species.

Habitat

The reserve protects mature coastal woodland with dense undergrowth, open glades and quiet walking trails. These habitats provide ideal conditions for owls, nightjars, turacos, woodpeckers and a wide range of forest birds.

Brufut Woods offers excellent birdwatching throughout the year. Early mornings are ideal for general bird activity, while experienced local guides can often locate roosting Long-tailed Nightjars and owls during daylight hours.
