Just 30 minutes from the main tourist hotels, Abuko Nature Reserve is The Gambia’s oldest protected area and one of its most celebrated birdwatching destinations. Despite its relatively small size, the reserve contains an exceptional variety of habitats, including gallery forest, freshwater wetlands, Guinea savanna and open woodland, supporting an impressive diversity of birds and other wildlife.

Bird Highlights

Abuko is renowned for its rich forest birdlife and offers excellent opportunities to observe many sought-after West African species.

The reserve combines mature gallery forest, freshwater pools, dense woodland, palm groves and Guinea savanna. These varied habitats support a remarkable concentration of forest specialists, waterbirds and resident wildlife within a compact area.

Best Time to Visit

Birdwatching is excellent throughout the year, with early mornings offering the highest levels of activity. The shaded forest trails provide comfortable birding even during the warmer months, while resident species can be observed in every season.
